As a tenor saxophone sideman, he worked with jazz legend Little Jimmy Scott. His article "Hip Hop Planet" in National Geographic's April 2007 issue is a respected treatise on African American music and culture. As a songwriter, McBride has written songs for various artists, including Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr., and Gary Burton. His work has appeared in publications such as Essence, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. ![]() Before becoming a full-time writer, McBride was a staff writer at The Washington Post, People Magazine, and The Boston Globe. He holds several honorary doctorates and is currently a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University. McBride's educational background includes studying composition at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio and earning his Master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University in New York at age 22.
